Mulled Wine with Whole Spices

Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients
  • 1 bottle red wine Cabernet, merlot, zinfandel, or a red blend work well.
  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup Can substitute with honey.
  • 3 slices orange For flavor and garnish.
  • 1 inch fresh ginger Thinly sliced.
  • 2 sticks cinnamon
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 5 whole allspice berries
  • 1 Tbsp whole cardamom pods
  • 2 whole star anise
  • Grated nutmeg For garnish.
  • Fresh herbs (rosemary, sage, thyme) Optional garnishes.
  • Fresh cranberries Optional garnish.
  • Additional fruit slices (orange, apple, pear) For garnish.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Pour the wine into a pot and add the maple syrup, orange slices, and all of the spices except for the garnishes.
  2. Heat on medium until the wine is just barely simmering.
  3. Turn the heat to low and keep it at a low simmer for at least 20 minutes. Do not boil.
  4. When you're ready to serve, strain or scoop out the oranges and spices from the mulled wine.
  5. Use a ladle to pour the mulled wine into individual mugs.
  6. Garnish with an orange slice and freshly grated nutmeg, if using. You can also add a cinnamon stick, star anise, fresh herbs, fresh cranberries, and/or fruit slices for decoration.

Notes

Serve warm, and offer garnishes on the side for customization. Ideal for cozy gatherings with a soft music backdrop. Store leftover mulled wine in an airtight container for up to three days in the refrigerator, and reheat gently without boiling.
