Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients
  • 1 bottle bottle of red wine Choose a fruity red like Merlot or Zinfandel.
  • 1 piece orange, sliced Zest for extra aroma.
  • 1 piece lemon, sliced Squeeze for a zippy flavor.
  • 1/4 cup sugar Adjust to taste; honey or maple syrup can be used instead.
  • 2 sticks cinnamon sticks For flavor and aroma.
  • 4 pieces cloves Use whole cloves for best flavor.
  • 1 piece star anise Adds an exotic twist.
  • 2 cups water Can be replaced with fresh cider.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the red wine, sliced orange, sliced lemon, sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and water.
Cooking
  1. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it just starts to simmer—don't let it boil!
  2. Once simmering, reduce the heat and let it steep for about 20 minutes.
Serving
  1. Carefully strain the mixture into heatproof mugs or glasses, discarding the spices and citrus.
  2. Garnish with a few fresh slices of citrus or a cinnamon stick for presentation.

Notes

Feel free to customize with your favorite spices and fruits. Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days.
