Ingredients
  

For the Mulled Wine
  • 1 bottle red wine (cabernet, merlot, zinfandel, or a red blend) Choose your favorite for a fruity depth.
  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup (or honey) A natural sweetener to balance the spices.
  • 3 slices orange Adds freshness and a bright citrus note.
  • 1 inch fresh ginger (thinly sliced) Adds a warm zing.
  • 2 sticks cinnamon For swirling magic flavors.
  • 5 whole cloves Brings a comforting taste.
  • 5 whole allspice berries For a warm, nutmeg-like flavor.
  • 1 Tbsp whole cardamom pods A fragrant kick with floral aroma.
  • 2 whole star anise Adds a lovely licorice flavor.
  • to taste grated nutmeg For finishing touches of warmth.
  • to taste fresh herbs (such as rosemary, sage, or thyme) Add an earthy touch.
  • as needed fresh cranberries, orange slices, apple slices, or pear slices Use as garnishes for stunning drinks.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Pour the wine into a pot and add the maple syrup, orange slices, and all the spices except the garnishes. Heat on medium until fragrant.
  2. Once the wine is just barely simmering, turn the heat down to low and let it simmer for at least 20 minutes.
  3. When you’re ready to serve, strain the wine to keep it smooth, and pour into individual mugs.
  4. Garnish each mug with an orange slice and a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg. Optionally, add a cinnamon stick or a few fresh cranberries.

Notes

Use quality wine for the best flavor. Adjust sweetness and experiment with spices to your liking.
