Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons water (as needed) Add more as needed
Cooking and Serving
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
  • 1 tablespoon oil (for cooking)
  • Optional: minced garlic, chopped cilantro, or seeds for garnish

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda.
  2. Add the yogurt and a bit of water. Knead everything together to form a soft dough.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rest for at least 1 hour.
  4. Once rested, divide the dough into equal portions and roll each portion into a ball.
  5. Roll out each ball into a teardrop shape, making it about 1/4 inch thick.
Cooking
  1. Heat a skillet or tandoor over medium-high heat, and brush it with oil.
  2. Place the rolled dough onto the skillet and cook for about 1-2 minutes until bubbles form.
  3. Flip it over and cook the other side until it’s golden brown.
  4. Remove from the heat and brush with melted butter.
  5. If you want, sprinkle with minced garlic or chopped cilantro before serving with rice and curry.

Notes

Make sure to knead the dough well; this helps in making the naan soft. If the dough feels sticky, add a little more flour until it’s manageable. For extra flavor, experiment with different toppings like herbs, spices, or cheese. Always preheat your skillet well for the best cooking results.
