Ingredients

Cheese and Coating
  • 12 ounces mozzarella cheese (string cheese sticks work well) The star of the show! String cheese is particularly fun and easy to work with.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Helps our coating stick—don’t skimp on the dredging!
  • 2 large eggs Beaten to create that lovely binding layer.
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs (Italian seasoned preferred) Adds delightful crunch and flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Enhances the overall taste.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning Gives a nod to Italian flavors.
  • to taste salt and pepper Enhances flavor.
  • as needed oil for frying Use a neutral oil like canola or vegetable.

Method

Preparation
  1. Chill the cheese by cutting it into sticks and placing it in the freezer for at least one hour to help it hold its shape when frying.
  2. Set up your breading station with three bowls: one for flour, one for beaten eggs, and one for seasoned breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  3. Take each mozzarella stick, roll it in flour, dip it in the egg, and coat it generously with the seasoned breadcrumbs.
Cooking
  1. Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat until it's hot but not smoking. A test drop of breadcrumb should sizzle.
  2. Carefully add the mozzarella sticks to the hot oil, frying until they turn golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side.
  3. Remove the sticks with a slotted spoon and let them drain on paper towels. Serve hot with marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

Use fresh cheese for a gooier experience. Don't overcrowd the pan when frying.
