Ingredients

For the Filling
  • 6 cups thinly sliced apples Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for depth of flavor! Granny Smith and Honeycrisp work wonderfully together.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Adjust based on the sweetness of your apples; if they’re extra sweet, try ¾ cup instead.
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice You can buy this pre-made or mix cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice at home.
  • 2 tablespoons flour This helps thicken the juices while baking so your pie doesn’t get too runny.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Brightens the flavors and keeps your apples from browning.
  • 2 tablespoons butter Dot on top of the apple filling for added richness.
For the Crust
  • 1 package pie crusts Feel free to use store-bought or make your own.
  • 1 egg for egg wash Gives your crust a beautiful golden finish.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, apple pie spice, flour, and lemon juice. Mix well.
  3. Place one pie crust into a pie pan. Fill it with the apple mixture and dot with butter.
  4. Cover the pie with the second crust, sealing the edges and cutting slits for steam to escape. Optionally, create a design.
  5. Brush the top with a beaten egg.
Baking
  1. Bake the pie in the oven for 15 minutes at 425°F (220°C), then reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for another 30-35 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden.
  2. Let it cool before slicing.

Notes

For the best flavor, serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days. You can also freeze the unbaked pie for up to three months.
