Main Ingredients
  • 1 bottle red wine A medium-bodied red wine like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon is recommended.
  • 1 orange (sliced) Can garnish with an extra slice for serving.
  • 1 lemon (sliced) Can garnish with an extra slice for serving.
  • 2 sticks cinnamon
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 3 pieces star anise
  • 1/4 cup sugar (to taste) Adjust based on taste preference.
  • 1/2 cup brandy (optional) Enhances flavor; omit for non-alcoholic version.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a large pot, combine the red wine, orange slices, lemon slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium heat until steaming, but do not let it boil.
  3. Stir in the sugar until dissolved.
  4. If using, add the brandy and stir well.
  5. Let it simmer on low heat for about 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  6. Strain the mixture to remove the spices and serve warm in mugs.

Notes

Serve warm in mugs or heat-safe glasses. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat gently.
