Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients
  • 2 bottles dry red wine Use a good quality wine for best flavor.
  • 2 cups orange juice
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar or maple syrup/agave Adjust sweetness to taste.
  • 2 pieces oranges, sliced
  • 1/2 cup fresh cranberries
Spices
  • 10 pieces whole cloves
  • 4 pieces star anise
  • 6 pieces cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 cup brandy (optional) Omit for a non-alcoholic version.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Place a medium saucepan over medium-high heat on the stove.
  2. Add the orange juice and granulated sugar, stirring until the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Add the red wine along with all the spices and fruits.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the mulled wine simmer for 30 minutes.
  5. Taste the Gluhwein and adjust the flavor if necessary.
  6. Serve the mulled wine garnished with cinnamon sticks, orange peel, star anise, cranberries, and anything else you enjoy!

Notes

If you have leftover Gluhwein, let it cool completely and store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat it gently on the stove, but do not boil it.
