Base Ingredients
  • 2 pounds thinly sliced potatoes Use a mandoline for evenly sliced potato rounds.
  • 1 unit onion, thinly sliced Adds sweetness and depth.
Cheese Ingredients
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Brings sharp flavor.
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese Creates delightful stretch.
Cream and Seasonings
  • 2 cups heavy cream Can swap for half-and-half for a lighter texture.
  • to taste salt and pepper Enhances the natural flavors.
  • for greasing butter Ensures nothing sticks.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Generously grease your baking dish with butter.
  3. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish.
  4. Sprinkle half of the sliced onions over the potatoes.
  5. Add half of the cheddar and mozzarella cheese over the onions.
  6. Pour half of the heavy cream over the layers.
  7. Repeat with the remaining potatoes, onions, cheese, and cream.
  8. Sprinkle salt and pepper to taste over the top.
  9. Cover the dish with aluminum foil.
Baking
  1. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 45 minutes.
  2. After 45 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
Serving
  1. Let the dish cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Can be prepared a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator. Leftovers can be turned into a breakfast hash.
