Preparing the Patties
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined—avoid overmixing, as this can make the patties tough.
- Shape the mixture into four equal patties, about ¾-inch thick. Use your thumb to create a small indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up while cooking.
Preheating the Grill or Pan
- Heat your grill or a heavy skillet over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes until hot. If using a skillet, add a splash of oil to prevent sticking.
Cooking the Patties
- Place the patties on the grill or in the pan. Cook for about 5-7 minutes on one side—don’t flip too soon! You want a nice crust to form.
- Flip the patties and immediately top each with a slice of cheese. Cook for an additional 4-5 minutes for medium doneness, or longer if you prefer well done.
Toasting the Buns
- While the burgers are finishing, cut the hamburger buns in half. Toast them on the grill or in a toaster until lightly golden for about 1-2 minutes.
Assembling the Burgers
- Once the burgers are cooked to your liking, transfer them to the toasted buns. Top with lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, and your choice of condiments. Serve immediately for the best taste.
Notes
Serve hot with sides like fries or a salad. Consider making a burger bar for customization.
