Ingredients

For the Caramel Sauce
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar This is your sweet base! Make sure to measure correctly for perfect caramel.
  • 0.5 cups water Just adds moisture to help dissolve the sugar and prevent burning.
  • 0.25 teaspoons kosher salt A pinch of salt enhances the caramel's flavor.
  • 0.75 cups heavy cream This brings all that luscious creaminess to the caramel.
  • 1 tablespoon cold unsalted butter A secret ingredient for rich and smooth caramel.
For the Chocolate Sauce
  • 6 oz dark chocolate chips Choose a good quality chocolate for the best flavor!
  • 1 tablespoon oil This helps the chocolate melt smoothly.
For the Apples
  • 6 medium apples (washed and sliced) Feel free to use your favorites like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith.
  • 0.5 cups chopped nuts of choice (optional) Add a delightful crunch with pecans or walnuts.

Method

Make the Caramel Sauce
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and salt. Stir gently until the sugar is fully dissolved.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Watch closely as it caramelizes.
  3. Without stirring, let it boil until it turns a deep amber color, about 10 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and carefully stir in the heavy cream—watch out for splatter.
  5. Add the cold butter and stir until melted and glossy. Let it cool slightly.
Make the Chocolate Sauce
  1. In a separate microwave-safe bowl, combine the dark chocolate chips and oil.
  2. Microwave in 20-second increments, stirring until fully melted and smooth.
Slice the Apples
  1. Using a sharp knife, slice your apples into wedges, about ¼-inch thick.
  2. Optional: dip the apple slices in lemon juice to keep them fresh.
Assemble the Caramel Apple Slices
  1. Arrange apple slices on a platter. Drizzle them with warm caramel and chocolate or dip each slice directly.
  2. Sprinkle chopped nuts over the top if desired.

Notes

Make sure to have everything prepped before starting the caramel—once it’s cooking, it needs your full attention. Use a candy thermometer if you’re unsure about the caramel’s doneness; you want it to reach about 350°F. If the caramel hardens before you finish dipping, gently reheat it. Let the slices sit for a few minutes before serving to let the chocolate and caramel set.
