Ingredients

For the Blackberry Syrup
  • 1 cup blackberries Fresh berries are best, but frozen will work.
  • 1 cup sugar Can substitute with coconut sugar.
  • 1 cup water Use filtered water for best taste.
For the Spider Dough
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can be substituted with gluten-free flour.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter Dairy-free option: use coconut oil.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder Helps the dough rise.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Balances sweetness.
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Adds warmth and depth.
  • Powdered sugar for dusting For a pretty finish.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a pot, combine blackberries, sugar, and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring gently until the blackberries break down and the mixture thickens into a syrup.
  3. In a bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter using fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in vanilla and gradually add cold water to form a soft, pliable dough.
  5. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut out spider shapes with cookie cutters.
  6. Place the shapes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and fill the centers with a dollop of blackberry syrup.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the edges are golden.
  8. Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Chill the dough for easier rolling if it's too soft, and use fresh blackberries for the best flavor.
