For the filling
  • 1 cup chopped pecans Provides a gorgeous crunch and earthy flavor
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar Adds depth of sweetness and a hint of caramel flavor
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened Always use unsalted butter for the best taste
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup Pure maple syrup is recommended
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Brings homey flavors
For the crust and topping
  • 1 package pie crusts Store-bought or homemade
  • 1 piece egg (for egg wash) Gives a beautiful golden glaze
  • Powdered sugar (for icing) Drizzled for a sweet finish

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine chopped pecans, brown sugar, softened butter, maple syrup, and cinnamon. Whisk until well mixed.
  3. Roll out the pie crusts on a floured surface and cut them into 4-5 inch circles.
  4. Place a tablespoon of the pecan mixture onto one half of each circle.
  5. Fold over the other half of the pie crust and seal the edges with a fork.
  6. Brush the tops with a beaten egg.
Baking
  1. Place the pies on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  2. Let the baked hand pies cool on a wire rack, then drizzle with powdered sugar icing.

Notes

Chill your dough before rolling to make it easier to handle. Don't overfill the pies, and keep an eye on them during the last few minutes of baking.
