Ingredients
  

For the Mulled Wine
  • 1 bottle red wine Use a fruity red wine, like Merlot or Zinfandel.
  • 1/4 cup sugar Adjust according to taste.
  • 1 piece orange (sliced) For garnish and flavor.
  • 1 piece lemon (sliced) Adds citrus flavor.
  • 3-4 whole cloves Can add more for a stronger spice flavor.
  • 1-2 sticks cinnamon Adjust based on preference.
  • 1 piece star anise (optional) For additional spice, optional.
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional) Adds richness; omit for non-alcoholic version.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a large saucepan, combine the red wine, sugar, orange slices, lemon slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise.
  2. Heat gently over medium heat until it is just below a simmer, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar. Do not let it boil.
  3. Once it's warm and fragrant, remove from heat and stir in brandy if using.
  4. Serve warm in mugs with slices of orange for garnish.

Notes

Enjoy warm, garnished with a slice of orange or a cinnamon stick. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently, avoiding boiling.
