Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until they are soft and translucent, about 4-5 minutes.
- In a large bowl, combine the potato bread cubes, diced apples, diced ham, thyme, sage, salt, and pepper. Toss gently to mix.
- Pour the sautéed onion and garlic over the bread mixture and combine by hand.
- Add the shredded Gruyere cheese and pour the broth over the mixture, stirring until well combined.
- Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish and spread it evenly.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes, until golden brown on top.
- Let it cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Use stale bread for the best texture. Experiment with different cheeses or add nuts for extra crunch. You can prepare a day in advance.
