Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until they are soft and translucent, about 4-5 minutes.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the potato bread cubes, diced apples, diced ham, thyme, sage, salt, and pepper. Toss gently to mix.
  4. Pour the sautéed onion and garlic over the bread mixture and combine by hand.
  5. Add the shredded Gruyere cheese and pour the broth over the mixture, stirring until well combined.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish and spread it evenly.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes, until golden brown on top.
  9. Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Use stale bread for the best texture. Experiment with different cheeses or add nuts for extra crunch. You can prepare a day in advance.
